On both the Europeanand the American roads scooter and motorcycle riders are becoming an increasingly common sight. Scooters in particular are becoming more popular, a craze that started in Europe, specifically Italy with their invention of the Vespa. The American scooter market has been cornered by Honda and Yamaha.

Many people, especially the young, tend to underestimate the power of these vehicles and the fact that they can do both themselves and other people significant damage if they fail to drive without due care and attention. Just like any other motor vehicle the scooter carries the potential for danger and harm and if you drive without insurance, almost anywhere that you live, then you are driving illegally. You need insurance in the same way that you would if you were driving a car. An increasing number of motorcycle and scooter riders want to take their vehicles abroad. American scooter/bike riders will need to purchase foreign motor insurance in the form of a Green Card if they wish to drive around Europe.

When you ride your scooter or bike in Europe you will need to have fire, theft and liability insurance. It is suggested that you purchase liability insurance that will cover any accidents, any bodily or property damage as well as medical cover. Just like automobile drivers you may also want to consider a collision damage waiver, if you ride across Italy then this would be mandatory. You may also want to consider breakdown cover in Europe if you don’t want to find yourself stranded alone at night on a foreign road with a mechanical failure. All of this may seem like a lot of insurance for riding your bike or scooter across Europe, however, it is nothing like what it could cost you if you don’t have full cover.
