Pottering Through Poland via Car

If you decide to take your vacation in Poland and see some of the beautiful churches and the diabolical site of Auschwitz then you will probably fly in land in Warsaw or Krakow. These are the major cities in Poland and if you want to hire a car so that you can travel from your hotel to other parts of the country then these are the best places to find a car rental company. Don’t leave Warsaw without a visit to the older part of town where the Nazis had all of the Jews placed in a ghetto even before the start of World War Two.

Poland’s roads are not quite up to European standard yet and certainly not up to American standards so you may want to take it steadily as there are plenty of potholes and uneven road surfaces. When you get your car from the car rental agency the documentation should tell you what you are covered for when you are driving through Poland. You should go to see your insurance advisor before you start out on your trip as they will be able to tell you about special documentation such as the Green Card for non-European drivers. They should also advise you about the CDW or collision damage waiver.

The rental company will probably insure against third party damage but if the rental car is damaged in a collision then without a collision damage waiver you could find yourself paying out a lot of money. The waiver is much cheaper to buy in America than in Europe so get it before you go. Once you have your insurance settled then you can get on and enjoy Poland. Krakow is well worth a visit with its salt statues that were carved out in the seventeenth century there are plenty of museums and galleries and you shouldn’t miss a visit to the old Jewish quarter.
