Ex Pats Insurance in France
In France there is a growing British ex pat community, many of whom drive cars and are constantly on the look out for the best insurance rates for driving in France. If you live in France and you own a car then it is very important that you understand car insurance in France. What we in the UK call third party insurance, the French call Auto Liability Insurance for any damages or injuries that you may cause to another person when you are driving your car. This type of insurance will not cover the cost of repairing your own car, nor will it cover any medical expenses arising from the road accident that you were involved in. There are other things, that will cover damage to your vehicle but under French law, these are not required, only recommended. However, if you are not to spend a fortune as a result of a car accident then you need to find some insurance that is useful to you and not too heavy on your pocket.
Once you have your Auto liability insurance proof, you will also be given a standard accident report form. The form is signed by both drivers in the event of an accident, the form is sufficiently long to allow each driver involved in the accident to write down his or her view of the accident. The form is from a template and once the accident form is filled out each driver is given a copy to present to their insurer. Only pages signed on the front by both parties can be regarded as legal proof of what happened in the accident. You can also by collision coverage and fire and theft coverage when you sign the form.
