European Breakdown Cover Explained
Plenty of UK drivers are now taking to the roads when they go on holiday to Europe. Most of them survive without any problems whatsoever and go back year after year, however, they may think that they are covered if their vehicle breaks down because it is at home.
A lot of drivers are a bit confused as to the different insurance cover rules that apply in most of Europe and if you don’t check things out then you could find yourself in trouble. There is nothing worse than being stranded in an area you don’t know where no-one is around, but your breakdown cover usually means that you know your vehicle will be recovered and returned safely, and you will be given safe passage home.
You are not covered if you car breaks down in Europe unless you have a specific European breakdown cover. Some breakdown policies may include European breakdown cover but an increasing number do not. If you’re not covered then not only could you be stuck up a mountain road in the back of nowhere with no way of getting down, you could also be breaking the law. In some parts of Europe the law says that you must have European breakdown cover if you are going to drive there. Check with your insurer just exactly what you are covered for when you are driving through Europe. You may need to get yourself some supplementary cover while you are away or you might need to change your auto insurer altogether. Don’t drive through Europe unless you have European breakdown cover or you could find yourself with a huge recovery and transportation bill, and in some cases you may face legal proceedings.
