Driving in Europe is Different

More Americans are visiting Europe than ever before and some of them want to drive around when they get there. If you plan on driving in Europe then you should be aware that it is quite different from driving in America. You should seek out information, especially auto insurance in Europe, before you go abroad, that way you won’t be taken by surprise when you get there. You may dream of driving along the banks of the Seine or sightseeing around Rome, but unless you have the proper kind of insurance you could find yourself in a lot of trouble.

When you drive in Europe, you will need to take both your American license, and an International license, your insurer will be able to tell you how to get one. It is also a good idea to seek assistance from your insurance provider regarding European auto insurance. Probably your best option is a Green Card, which is essentially a set of documents that will tell whoever looks at them that you are fully insured to drive in most European countries. Some countries in Europe, for example the Balkan States, have different rules and you may need to purchase add on insurance before you can enter one of these countries. If you don’t get a Green Card then you may want to ask your insurer about International insurance, it is possible to get yourself insured for the duration of the trip and it’s probably cheaper to buy before you go.

If you plan to rent a car then you should book it when you are planning your vacation. Check out what level of insurance the rental agency offers or you could find that you are only covered for basic liability insurance – not good if your vehicle breaks down while you are driving in a foreign country. Providing you check everything out before you go and make sure you have the right level of cover then things should be fine.
