Driving a Minibus in Europe

Sometimes you want to go on holiday alone or with your partner but sometimes you may want a complete change and decide to go with a group of friends. If you are going skiing in Europe rather than on the slopes at home then as a group it might be a good idea to arrange some form of transport for when you get there. Rather than travelling in two or three cars why not hire a minibus? Most car rental companies in Europe also hire minibuses so it is much the same process as if you were hiring a vehicle just for yourself.

Whenever you plan to drive in a foreign country you should always check with your auto insurance company as to the required documentation and any other cover that you might need. A minibus is not designed to carry more than sixteen passengers and very often the ideal is about half that. The rules on documentation for a minibus differ from that to a car you may need some extra insurance when you are driving in Europe. It is a good idea if you are going with friends for you or someone else to be the designated driver for the group – that way there will be less problems regarding licenses and insurance. You will need to get a Green card as this is an internationally recognized driving qualification, your American license on its own is insufficient for driving in Europe.

One thing that you will need if you are driving a minibus to a ski resort in Europe is a way bill. A way bill acts as a sort of control document that allows you to drive from one member state to another. You need to check with the hire company whether the way bill is included in any insurance cover, if it isn’t then your own insurer should be able to tell you what to do.
