Breakdown Cover in Italy
Most people who drive a car will have breakdown cover, which means that at the very least they will receive roadside assistance if their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. If you plan on driving your car in countries other than the UK, Italy for example, then your ordinary breakdown cover is of no use. You should let your insurance provider know that you are driving your car through Europe; they will advise you that you should have European breakdown cover. You can take out a policy for a month if you don’t expect to be abroad for more than a couple of weeks. If you don’t break down, that’s fine, the insurance premium will only have cost you a few pounds, but if you do break down then you won’t be facing the hefty price of having your car shipped back to the UK.
Any vehicle breakdown is bad enough, but breaking down on a lonely road in another country is a whole different ball game. You really should check with your insurance provider about the level of cover you will need when you drive your car through Italy or any other European country. If you only have breakdown insurance that applies to the UK then you could find yourself with a hefty repairs and/or shipping bill if you break down while you are in Europe. Insurance companies advise that you should check your tyre pressure and brake fluid before travelling abroad. In addition to the above you should plan your route carefully and check the driving laws in Italy and any other European countries you may drive through.
