More Americans are choosing to take European vacations and hire a car when they get there. When you drive in a foreign country you should get yourself Green Card insurance, you can, if you like get it when you arrive in Europe, though it’s probably cheaper to buy before you leave. Makes sure that you know exactly what you are covered for when you are driving through Europe.

Although most of us don’t really concern ourselves with the fact that our car could break down, the fact is that it can. Nobody wants to find themselves on a dark country road when their car breaks down, however, as most people have some sort of breakdown cover, they can call for roadside assistance and the problem is soon dealt with. If you are driving in Europe and you break down, your insurance may not cover you.

If you plan to drive a vehicle through Europe then you really should have proper insurance cover, in fact many insurers are now warning drivers that foreign use and/or European breakdown cover is essential. Those drivers who wish to drive in a country that is not within their normal range may have to obtain Green card insurance. If you live in the UK and plan on traveling to Europe and you need to bump up your breakdown cover then it needn’t cost the earth. Some providers will give you euro breakdown cover for as little as £12.50 a trip. You may not realise it but your regular breakdown cover does not extend to Europe unless your policy specifically says it does.

If you really want to get to know Europe, then the best way of doing this is to drive around it – but learn about European auto insurance first. If you are traveling from the United States then the best way to do this is to use a car hire firm. Book the car rental before you go and check with your insurance provider that you have International cover. You may think that car rental company has it all sorted but that is not so. Most of the time the only thing that the rental company will provide is third party which is the same as basic liability insurance, this means that if there should be a collision then you could find yourself with $30,000 costs to replace the hire car.

Do some research about European auto insurance before you take your car on holiday. Just because the UK is a member of the European Union doesn’t mean that you can assume your insurance will cover you. The fact of the matter is that there are differences in insurance laws in some EU member states, and if you should break down while you are there, then without euro breakdown cover you could find yourself with a whole lot of problems.
